Pyramid Head drawing, for fun. I started doing some doodles while watching this making-of video about the brilliant Silent Hill 2, and just ended up taking this particular one to completion.
It’s unfortunate that horror as a genre has become so mediocre in recent years. Ito Masahiro and Akihiro Imamura strike me as a pair of really thoughtful guys, recognizing the importance of genuine creepiness and psychological uneasiness that really sticks ideas and images in your head. This almost feels like something of a lost art these days, drowning in the sea of generic exorcism films and Saw sequels. Masahiro took the high road less traveled, here: just compare the bizarre psychosexual insinuations in Pyramid Head’s original game appearance to the generic, scar-covered giant from the films. Nominally the same character, but they’re actually worlds apart in terms of depth and emotional impact.
Though I don’t agree with all of it, this video about creepiness and why we respond to uncanny things in the way we do is pinpointing something very important. I wish every forgettable horror movie director would watch and commit it to memory.
Anyway, that’s more than enough pontificating about things that are dear to my heart and few others. Tl;dr: Silent Hill 2 is real good.
