A portrait of Jim Weber, long-time radio announcer for the Toledo Mud Hens. Jim has been with the Mud Hens for 39 years and has announced over 5,000 consecutive baseball games.
The Art Director was initially looking for a caricature, but as we discussed the project it ended up evolving into a more naturalistic drawing instead; something that wouldn’t be seen as poking fun at Jim but instead emphasizing his enthusiasm, positivity, and love for the game.
By the way, they don’t really use microphones like that anymore. Jim has a cool headset with a mic on it, and I guess pretty much every other sports announcer does, too, but in my mind there’s nothing like a guy leaning forward and clutching a vintage radio mic to convey that Buy Me Some Peanuts and Cracker Jacks stuff.
LET’S GO HENS!
